Nottingham Panthers Make Another Final

Nottingham Panthers are through to yet another play off final and they keep their dream of a grand slam alive after securing the league title and challenge cup earlier this season.

The National Ice Centre was somewhat subdued throughout this match as a closely fought contest created a tense atmosphere until an empty net goal from Matthew Myers secured the victory at 6-3 and a hat-trick against his former club, and hometown, which he celebrated in a respectful fashion.

Despite a preference from Panther’s players to meet Coventry Blaze in the final it was the Belfast Giants that came through comfortably in the second semi final to set up the game that everyone wanted to see; the two best teams in the league going head to head.

Opinions on the performance of the Devils were mixed.  Fans generally of the mind that a 6-3 score-line was more than fair on the Devils, while both Cardiff’s player coach, Gerard Adams, and Nottingham’s Corey Neilson seeing the game a little closer: “I thought Cardiff played really well.  They played a lot more aggressive than they’ve typically played us. I don’t think they generated a whole lot” Neilson explained, “but when they got them [chances] they seemed to take them.”  Cardiff could have won it according to Gerard Adams, “I thought we played good enough to win… we just came up short against a better hockey team.”

When asked if Corey had a preference to who he met in the final his response was; “not really…I’d like to face the team whose goalie is not playing well.” Who knows how Murphy will get on in the final but it will certainly be a close game.  Tense, nervous, maybe just the one goal in it.  But a fitting finale to what has been a great season of ice hockey.
